Ileocolonoscopy

Ileocolonoscopy is a specialized diagnostic procedure that allows a doctor to examine the inner lining of the colon (large intestine) and the terminal ileum, which is the last part of the small intestine. The procedure is performed using a flexible tube called a colonoscope, equipped with a light and camera that provides detailed images of the digestive tract. It is commonly recommended to investigate symptoms such as abdominal pain, chronic diarrhea, rectal bleeding, unexplained weight loss, or changes in bowel habits.

This procedure plays a vital role in diagnosing and monitoring various gastrointestinal conditions, including inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, intestinal infections, polyps, and colorectal cancer. During the examination, tissue samples (biopsies) can be collected for further laboratory analysis, helping doctors make accurate diagnoses and develop effective treatment plans.

Ileocolonoscopy is generally performed under sedation to ensure patient comfort. The procedure is considered safe and minimally invasive, with most patients able to return to their normal activities shortly afterward. Early detection of digestive disorders through ileocolonoscopy can significantly improve treatment outcomes and help maintain long-term gastrointestinal health. Regular screening may also be advised for individuals with a family history of colorectal diseases or other risk factors.
